Whoever is certain of what they see
has stopped looking.
Walk your usual way one morning
and ask yourself:
who made that choice?
And how many times has it been made?
Every choice has its shadow side.
Every gaze its unchosen.
No choice vanishes for not being taken –
it settles on the other side
and walks along.
Don't be afraid of it.
It is your shadow.
Without shadows, no lit paths.
Without the unchosen, nothing chosen.
Close one eye.
The unchosen goes unnoticed –
everything remains.
Yet something vanished:
the depth – which lives
in the difference between two gazes.
That is how the world is built.
You and the other –
two eyes seeing the same thing.
Something sees through both.
This is dualism.
Not the war over what the world is made of.
Two gazes – and the distance between them,
just wide enough to give experience depth.
Picture a band with two sides
that can never touch.
How would the divided come home?
Twist the band half a turn.
Join the ends.
Now there is only one surface –
but it remembers its sides.
That is roughly how consciousness works.
To make experience possible,
unity must pretend to be two.
And somewhere on it, you walk.
But you do not walk alone.
The shadow side has feet.
It walks beneath yours, step by step,
foot against foot, always below.
The choice of direction was made in the first step.
One's tracks you will find.
The other you will meet.
And a third may walk beside you – the whole way.
No hurry.
One day, tracks lie before you.
A stranger's, you think.
You have shaken your fist at these steps before –
at a distance they were everything you are not.
The trouble is they seem familiar.
Foreign tracks don't chafe with such precision.
And the size seems right.
Never, you once said.
Now you walk in the same tracks.
And the one coming toward you –
you once stood closest of all:
sole against sole, back against back,
too near to be seen, too near to bear.
Every step apart turned you together.
Say hello.
Or pretend it's raining.
The meeting happens anyway.
A face recognizes its face
even when both look away.
A life can tangle.
Not from walking – steps twist nothing.
But the road changed direction and you held on.
Turn after turn you braced against it,
thought you were holding yourself together –
you wound yourself up.
You who fight hardest do not own the fight.
The fight owns you.
At last you stand at the side of the road
and all is wilderness.
The band has snarled around itself.
Don't pull. Don't cut.
More resistance is one more turn.
Remember the strange stranger you couldn't bear to hear.
Of course his words sounded strange:
he walks the other way,
and comes from the stretch you have ahead.
Listen.
Not really for the answers' sake –
but because you, while listening,
are not bracing.
The loops are not knots.
Just a road you chose away
to wander brush and wilderness.
There is no ground beside the band.
The wilderness is road, overgrown.
You never stood beside it.
Let go and feel.
What you stand on holds.
One turn can be longer than a lifetime.
You may not make it around.
You are a pair of shoes on the road,
and shoes get changed.
The steps forget.
Something remembers –
and sees every footstep frozen in time.
What walks
in you
has walked before.
Whoever walks one full turn
comes home mirrored.
Yet the heart sits in the same place –
and everything looks just as usual.
Outside you see the same street.
Still, everything seems new.
The street is unchanged.
It is the gaze that changed sides.
Go on, if you like.
Or turn.
The road always leads home.
And –
whoever walks the whole way
sees the back of himself.
Outside of time.
And something has watched you walk all along.
Who is the wanderer?
