The Choice of Gate: Inner and Outer Paths to Well-Being

A binary framework (00, 01, 10, 11) explores how individuals and societies cycle between internal and external solutions to suffering, and why a world stuck in 01 favors power, noise, and closed inner gates over self-reflection.

The Choice of Gate

I have a thought…

There are two paths to well-being. The first is to change your situation until you are content. The second is to change your attitude toward the situation. Many choose neither. They suffer, ruminate, and complain. Suffering becomes identity.

I see a system.

10 – an internal solution. 01 – an external solution. 11 – an internal and external solution simultaneously. 00 – none of the above. The collective and the individual move through all these states in cycles.

Seen this way, we are all individuals out of phase.

Perspectives are powerful. Strong in different ways.

The outer draws strength from its ignorance, moves heavily with a sword to strike down. The inner draws strength from its awareness, moves lightly with a shield so as not to fall.

The external and internal flow in opposite directions. The friction creates tension. The tension creates movement. The movement becomes the current of life.

00 is the point in the cycle when nothing holds any longer. The old order collapses.

Hell is a realm of consciousness, yet materializes in the world.

01 means that material distress has become painful enough to compel action.

11 means we have realized that even perfectly crafted boxes must be filled with something.

10 occurs after abundance. The external and internal are satisfied. Then we rest – dozing off and forgetting what brought us to heaven.

No state is wrong, but necessary. The current of life is dependent on the tension.

If nothing collapses, nothing new is born. Form must dissolve to release energy.

If this feels cold or cynical – remember that life itself is born from the movement between the flame we carry within, burning for a time, and the coldness we must face along the journey.

Each state requires its captain. The captain's task is to steer the ship through each phase – and keep the crew alive.

In 00, the ship has lost its rudder and is at the mercy of the storm. In 01, the course is held straight through it. In 10, a lookout is kept over the sea. In 11, the ship is in harbor, planning the next leg of the journey.

In a world with 01 as the norm, those who seek power, money, and control are favored.

The door to the inner self is closed – and humanity seeks meaning and solutions in the external world.

Shortcomings are projected – onto "the others". The inner world echoes with emptiness.

And this void is filled – by ideology, fear, and authority.

Those who hold power over the narrative can shape the story of what to fear, what is wrong, who is to blame – and in doing so, help steer the collective direction.

People without an inner compass let someone else decide their direction.

In the 01-world, no straitjacket is needed. People wear their own – in the form of habits, identity, and stories about how the world is. These create a mental cage.

The collective's attention is directed outward. Toward what entices or frightens.

Self-reflection becomes a luxury. To pause – a disruption.

No one asks themselves where they are truly heading. For the question requires silence. And silence can reveal who one truly is.

Here, the one who shouts the loudest, points the fastest, and sells the simplest explanation is rewarded.

Those who hesitate, seek to understand, or take their time – are often seen as an obstacle.

Have you ever considered that we have a disparaging phrase, "to have one's head in the clouds," but no equivalent for someone who never looks up?

Perhaps because the latter is a state that is easier to reward.

In 01, medicine often becomes the offered solution for both physical and psychological ailments – it can soothe the symptom while leaving the deeper state untouched.

The inner gate remains closed. You continue to be productive. Often, you learn no more than what your role in the system seems to require.

To preserve 01, it is enough to keep everyone's gaze directed outward. The world is filled with noise, problems, and false enemies.

Much of the collective attention can be redirected – much like a cat is tricked into chasing the red dot of a laser pointer.

In a 01-world, stillness is undesirable. For in stillness, one might begin to look deeper and understand the game.

When illusion becomes the foundation, that foundation must be defended with more illusions.

The inner gaze becomes a threat. And threats are neutralized.

Those who understand are often called strange, passive, ignorant.

And it's clever, because it works – until it doesn't.

When people begin to suspect that something isn't right, it can feel as if the cage is shaken harder – drawing the gaze outward again and keeping the question at bay.

But shake it too hard, and the illusion shatters.

In that moment, the inner understanding of 10 awakens – which becomes a systemic threat.

For the inner gate eliminates the fear, the pace, the need to be filled from the outside. All the things that keep the machine running.

Then the world, accustomed to 01 – leaps directly to 11. Full potential and conscious agency.

Not everyone wants that. And yet.

If everyone stepped out of the equation, the tension might also cease – and with it, the current of life.

One who sees through the game is not free from it. But with clarity, you own the struggle – instead of the struggle owning you.

There are other gates. Not gates that lead out. But the one that leads to an understanding of where you are.

00 – the state before the question has even arisen. The child who does not yet know that they do not know.

01 – you know the system, the language, the rules. You deliver. But it is borrowed – not lived.

11 – action and insight move together. Rare. And difficult to maintain.

10 – you have seen through the system enough to no longer need to lean on it. But the risk is that you forget to participate.

Most get stuck in 01. Few reach 11.

Those who reach 10 risk becoming invisible – unless they find their way back to 11 as a pendulum's swing rather than a final destination.

When you interact with the world, you help steer its direction. Let the world interact with you, and you become its tool.

One who only responds becomes an echo. One who acts becomes a cause – conscious or unconscious.

For the cycle does not end at 10. One who understands from within can step back into the 01-world and engage with it without getting lost in it.

It is not the state that matters. It is the direction. If you know where you are, you can choose where to go.

See the lens. Meet yourself. Then understand the place from which you see.
